These are voluntary programmes for young people aimed at helping them develop life skills, job skills and/or physical fitness.
They include:
The Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) programme is a free, six-week military-style training camp for young people aged from 17 to 25 years old, who are not studying or working.
The programme is run by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) in partnership with NZ Police, with the NZDF providing the training.
LSV programmes are run on NZDF bases:
The course includes training in physical fitness, outdoor education, teamwork, life skills and job skills. NZDF provides clothing, food and accommodation (and any necessary medical support).
Tip: MSD encourages young people receiving a benefit to take part in LSV programmes, but it is voluntary.

The Service Academies (Youth Life Skills or YLS) programme is a free, one-year military-based motivational training course for high school students aged 17-18 years. It is part of the Youth Guarantee scheme for young people. Participants earn NCEA credits by completing three of the five courses, along with their school subjects (English, Maths etc).
The programme is led by the Ministry of Education, with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) providing the training. The programme is available at 29 schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. Some schools prioritise on preparing students for a career in the military, while other schools focus more on engaging students who are underachieving at school. YLS programmes are run at NZDF bases:
NZDF provides the training facilities, accommodation, clothing and food, and medical support where necessary.
Participating schools encourage senior students experiencing difficulties in their studies to take part, but it is voluntary.
Who holds records about YLS
If you spent time in a YLS programme, your school should have records about this. If your school no longer has these records, the Ministry of Education may have them.

Life Skills
Life Skills is a five-day residential camp for young people aged 14-17, where they can learn about teamwork, communication, self-management and self-confidence.
The programmes are run at NZDF bases:
100 Person Leadership Camp
100 Person Leadership Camp is a five-day residential leadership camp for students in Years 10 and 11, run at Whenuapai Base. Blue Light is a charity that works with the Police to support young people.
People who complete these programmes can earn NCEA credits.
Who has records about attendance in their programmes
If you spent time in a Blue Light programme, they should have records about this.
Your school referred you to the programme, they should also have records. If they no longer have these records, the Ministry of Education may have records.
