If a state, faith-based or other organisation made decisions about you, they should have records about this. You have a legal right to access these records. You may also be able to request records about whānau.
If you are in prison, you can still request records about you or your whānau, and / or claim redress.
You can do it yourself or get someone to do it on your behalf (for example, the Survivor Experience Service, a whānau member or a lawyer).
When your records arrive at the prison, these will be treated like any mail that is sent to people in prison - it will be read or searched before it is passed on to you.
Requesting your records can bring up a range of emotions. Learn where you can find support to help you on your journey.
