Oranga Tamariki holds records about 'Lookout Point Boys' Home' from 1946-1987 and from 'Dunedin Boys' Home' from 1971-2002. Archives NZ (Dunedin) holds records about Dunedin Boys' Home from at least 1974-1991, with Oranga Tamariki as the controlling agency for restricted records.
Gender: male 12 - 16 years Capacity: At around 1957, 16 Beds. Around 1970, 18 beds plus 4 secure beds Around 1984, 18 open beds +3 secure beds From 'Orphanages and Children's Homes in Otago and Southland': The Otago Industrial School was originally on the site, opening in January 1869 and closing in 1927. In 1928 the Dunedin Boys' Receiving Home opened on the site. A receiving home accommodated children with the intention of placing them elsewhere. It closed in 1991 and merged with Dunedin Girls Home to form Elliot Street Residential Centre (later named Puketai Care and Protection Residence). Puketai Care and Protection Residence is still operating. It appears that, after the closure of the Dunedin Boys' Home, the site was used for the Dunedin Resource Centre (unsure how long it operated for but is closed as of 2024). The Dunedin Resource Centre appears to have operated from both the old Dunedin Boys' Home location and another property in Hillhead.
