Father George Mahoney then became the manager, and Mr & Mrs Fitzgerald took charge.The building was destroyed by fire April 1903. A new building was completed in 1905.In 1920 the building was sold to government and the home was run by Department of Education.The home closed in 1919. For a short time, the building was used for as a ‘special school for backward boys’. Then it housed the Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital (a psychiatric hospital) in 1920 till around 2000.
