Psychiatric facilities were made by the Government to treat people with mental health conditions. These include psychopaedic hospitals (such as Kimberley Hospital and the Templeton Centre) to treat people with intellectual disabilities.
You can claim redress from the Ministry of Health or Health New Zealand if:
you experienced abuse while under the care of a government-run psychiatric, psychopaedic or mental health facility and
the abuse happened before 30 June 2022.
If the abuse happened before 1 July 1993, the Ministry of Health will manage your claim.
If the abuse happened between 1 July 1993 and 30 June 2022, Health New Zealand will manage your claim.
Your whānau may be able to progress your claim on your behalf if you die before your claim is settled.
If you have previously received a payment for a historic claim of abuse, you can register for a top-up payment.
The top-up payment is meant to make Ministry of Health redress payments similar to those of other redress agencies.
