Adult prison. In 1871 the first stage of the prison was opened as a women's reformatory. Temporary prison buildings for men were added soon after. Between the 1920s and 1951 the complex served as a dedicated women's prison. From around 1989, the building became a men's remand facility. Through much of the twentieth century the complex faced criticism for its primitive conditions. In 1999 the remand facility was permanently closed.
