Previously known as Homai College, Homai Vision Education Centre, Homai National School for the Blind & Vision Impaired (governed and administered by the Royal NZ Foundation for the Blind - RNZFB Act 1963). Became a state residential special school in 2000. From Whanaketia - Abuse in Care Royal Commission Final Report Part 2: "Jubilee Institute, which opened in 1890 and offered the first educational services for blind children in Aotearoa New Zealand, as well as a residential programme and workshops for blind adults. It was opened by the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind at Parnell. Homai School for the Blind replaced Jubilee Institute for the Blind of New Zealand, opening in 1965. A facility for Deafblind students was added in 1968." Specialist school for students who are blind, deaf blind or have low vision, plus those with additional disabilities. Includes a national network of regional Vision and Resource Centres, and residential facilities on the Homai campus for students who need residential programmes to support their learning.
