Oranga Tamariki holds records about Fareham House from 1961-1999. Archives NZ (Wellington) holds records about Fareham House from at least 1959-1961, with Oranga Tamariki as the controlling agency for restricted records. Oranga Tamariki should also hold personal records on young people who stayed at the institution and whom Department of Social Welfare (DSW) had involvement with.

"Opened to provide for the social and domestic training of older Maori girls who had left school and who required a period of intitutional tranining prior to placement. A change in policy concerning the function of this institution was made in 1963 and it now caters for difficult girls, both European and Maori, or primary school age who need long trerm institutional training."
