Marylands School - The Hospitaller Brothers of St John of God no longer operates in NZ, and say they no longer hold any records about Marylands - these would have been transferred to Dept of Education / Ministry of Education. 1951-1954: Marylands - a privately run home/residential school for 'delinquent' boys who were considered difficult or troublesome.
Sacred Hearts Congregation (Picpus Fathers) provided staff and managed the school. The Pipcus Fathers are from the Catholic religious Order, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Registered 21/8/1952, closed in 1955.
1955-1984: Marylands School - the Roman Catholic order Brothers Hospitallers of St John of God took over the school from the Picpus Brothers, provided staff for the school from 1954-1984, managed and governed the school.
Officially opened as a residential School, primarily for boys with learning disabilities, on 21 August 1955. The first children did not start school until 14 Nov 1955.
The school was in Middleton but moved in December 1968 to the premises in Halswell, next to St Joseph's Orphanage - this premises had been vacated in the late 1960s by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.1982: National residence run by Catholic Church, St John of God order, boys and girls.
1984-present: Hogben School - The buildings were purchased by the Ministry of Education in 1982, with the Ministry taking over the running of the school in 1984 and renaming it Hogben School.
In 2003 the school was renamed Halswell Residential School.
Gender and age: Currently mixed, aged 7-17. Previously male, 8-17 age groupCapacity: Currently, 32 beds (four purpose-built houses). In the 1980s, 104 beds.
