Residential School, primarily for boys with learning disabilities Controlling organisation: Hospitaller Brothers of St John of God (Catholic Church) Third-party provider to State, faith-based Operational period: Operated from 1954-1984 ; Registered 21/8/1952, potentially closed March 1955 - transitioned to a residential school. 1982: National residence run by Catholic Church, St John of God order, boys and girls 1984: changed name in 1984 to Hogben School when it was taken over by the Ministry of Education as a State special school. From RC report Stolen Lives, Marked Souls (Chapter 2, para 6): Before the St John of God brothers took over the facility, "Marylands was a home for 'delinquent' boys who were considered difficult difficult or troublesome and was run by another Catholic Order, the Picpus Fathers". The Pipcus Fathers are from the Catholic religious Order, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The school was in Middleton but moved in December 1968 to the premises in Halswell, next to St Joseph's Orphanage - this premises was vacated in the late 1960s by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. On 2 September 1983, the Order advises the Department of Education it is terminating its agreement to manage Marylands. On 23 January 1984, the Department of Education takes over Marylands from the Order. The land and school buildings had been owned by the Government since the 1970s when money was given for it to be rebuilt after a fire. The school changed name in 1984 to Hogben School when it was taken over by the Ministry of Education as a State special school (now Residential Special School).
