Archives NZ holds some records about Te Oranga Reformatory, Girls' Home Burwood, Girls' Training Centre Burwood, and Kingslea, with Oranga Tamariki as the controlling organisation for any restricted records. Oranga Tamariki holds records from Burwood Training Centre/Girls' Home (1968-2000), from Kingslea, and from Te Oranga Care and Protection Residence (from 2005-2011). Oranga Tamariki should also hold records about young people who stayed at this institution and whom DSW/CYF/Oranga Tamariki was involved with.

By 1994 Kingslea had a secure unit for up to six residents under 17 years who had been sentenced to a term of imprisonment, a 20 bed Youth Justice unit, and seven Care and Protection beds.
