Further information The forerunner to the Boys Home (a school for Maori boys) was set up by the Anglican Church under the Whakarewa School Trust on receipt of a grant of land from Governor George Grey in 1853 with the purpose of establishing a “native school”. For various reasons (largely concerning dispute over the legality of the grant) the school never got firmly established. The Diocese of Nelson eventually established an orphanage for boys (the Whakarewa Boys Home) which operated until 1975. (The Diocese decided in the early 1990s to give back the land and derived assets to descendants of the original Maori owners. The Whakarewa School Trust was dissolved in 1993 on the passing of the private Act of Parliament which transferred the land and assets to these Maori descendants.)
