Alternative Education (AE) is a specialist education service for young people in Years 9-11, who are disengaged - or at risk of disengaging - from mainstream schools.
For example, young people may have been excluded, suspended, truant or never enrolled in the first place, may be referred to AE.
The current AE system started in 2000, though some AE providers have been doing this work since before then.
Secondary schools are funded by the Ministry of Education to contract AE providers. An AE provider can be a school, iwi, hapū or community organisation.
If the Alternative Education (AE) provider is still operating as an AE provider, they should have records about when you (or your whānau) were enrolled with them. You can request AE records directly from the AE provider.
But many schools, iwi, hapū and community organisations that were AE providers are no longer AE providers. In this case, the Ministry of Education should have records about when you were in AE.
