When the Ministry of Social Development Historic Claims team (MSD) receives your redress claim, they will request your records from Oranga Tamariki to help them process the claim. You can request a copy of your records from MSD when you claim redress.
If you did not want a copy of your records when you first made your claim, you can change your mind at any time before MSD closes your claim.
If your claim has closed but MSD still holds a copy of your records, they can still provide you with them if you request it.
If MSD no longer has a copy of your records, you can contact Oranga Tamariki to request your records.

To request your records from MSD while they are processing your claim, contact them by:
MSD will send you a letter to say they received your request.
If a living whānau member registered a claim of abuse, and you have their written permission, you can apply for information MSD has about them, including their records.
MSD will want to see an Authority to Act form that your whānau member has signed, giving you permission to access their records.
They may also want to speak with your whānau member, to make sure they understand what it means to sign the form.
If you have whānau who registered a claim but passed away before their claim was closed, you may be able to access their records by requesting them from MSD as an Official Information Act request.
If MSD no longer has their copy of your whānau records, you may be able to request them from Oranga Tamariki as an Official Information Act request.
