Generally, records about the education side of the health camp (the health camp school) are either held by the Ministry of Education or are held at Archives NZ, with the Ministry of Education as the controlling agency. The affidavit from Stand Tū Māia to the Abuse in Care Inquiry makes no mention of the Nelson Health Camp so it is possible that its register has not survived.
Unfortunately, we do not have a lot of information for this page.
This could be because:
we have not received much - or any - information from the relevant organisation
we have not finished our research on this page’s topic
there is no more information available.
If you have information you would like to send us, we would love to hear from you.
Note: there is not much information about this health camp and health camp school as it was closed before the 1980s. Potential operational dates for the camp are c.1936-c.1971 based on Archives NZ records for the camp which range in date from 1936-1971, the mention of the camp being closed by the 1980s in Whanaketia, and an article which mentions the camp in 1939. This camp was never run by Stand Tū Māia, unlike other health camps, as it was closed before Stand Tū Māia took over operation of the camps c.2000. Gender and age: Mixed (5-12 age group) Controlling organisations: Responsibility shared between Government Department of Education and Department of Health. State control.
