The State redress service
If you make a claim with the State redress service, you can request your records at the same time.
Who can make a redress claim with the State redress service?
You can contact the State redress service to start the claims process for any one or more state redress agencies.
How do I make a redress claim with the State redress service?
You can contact the State redress service by phone, email or post. They will ask you for some information and and answer your questions. To make a claim, fill out a claim registration form.
What kinds of proof of ID can I use when I make a claim with the State redress service?
You will be asked for proof of your identity (proof of ID) when you contact the State redress service to make a claim, and when you complete a Serious Offender Declaration form.
What happens after I make a claim with the State redress service?
The State redress service will work out which government redress agency is responsible for your claim. The government agency will assess your claim and check your criminal history.
What happens after I send back the completed serious offender declaration form?
The Special Assessment Unit will check your criminal history and decide whether you are still eligible for financial redress. If they decide you are not eligible, you can ask for a review by the Independent Redress Officer.
Can I get my claim processed more quickly?
There are options for getting your claim processed more quickly if your claim is with MSD Historic Claims or the Ministry of Education Sensitive Claims.
Can I get my records when I make a claim with the State Redress Service?
You can request your records when you contact the State Redress Service to make a claim. But you can also request your records if without making a claim at the same time.
What will redress from the State (government) look like?
It will depend on your individual circumstances.
How do I make a complaint about how my claim is being handled?
If you are not satisfied after making a complaint to the State redress service or the government redress agency, you can contact the Ombudsman.
