If you were abused or neglected while in the care of guardianship of a State (government) institution, you can contact the State redress service to start the claims process.
If you have received redress before, you can still contact the State redress service to discuss if your situation.
The State redress service should connect you with the right government redress agency or agencies who will manage your claim. There are seven government agencies that the State redress service might connect you with. Each one has different eligibility criteria for providing redress:
You may be able to claim redress from the Ministry of Education if you were abused or neglected while attending a:
‘State schools’ includes integrated schools.
‘Specialist schools’ include residential special schools. They include:

You should be able to claim redress from MSD if you were abused or neglected while in the care or guardianship of the Child Welfare Division, the Department of Social Welfare, or Child, Youth and Family before 1 April 2017.
You should be able to claim redress from Oranga Tamariki if you were abused while in the care or custody of Oranga Tamariki, and it happened on or after 1 April 2017.
You should be able to claim redress from the Ministry of Health or Health New Zealand if you were abused or neglected in one or more of these places before 1 July 2022:
If the abuse happened before 1 July 1993, the Ministry of Health will manage your claim.
If the abuse happened between 1 July 1993 and 30 June 2022, Health New Zealand will manage your claim.
You should be able to claim redress from the Department of Corrections if you were abused or neglected while in a youth penal institution run by the old Department of Justice.
